Nicki Macklin

Associate editor

British Medical Journal Leader Division

Nicki recently submitted her PhD at the University of Auckland’s Medical School, exploring organisational kindness – what kindness is, why it matters, and what conditions support it at individual, team and organisational levels.

Nicki holds several different roles. She works as an Associate Editor for the British Medical Journal Leader division, supporting research on human connection to publication. As a patient advocate, she sits on a number of national and international committees and foundations. As a researcher, she works with several prominent global organisations, collaborating to establish links between kindness, social capital, and psychological safety and highlighting their shared impact in building high-performing teams and organisations. Nicki’s applied research predominantly focuses on helping teams build healthy group norms, supporting leadership development, and working with organisations to embed values like kindness within their structures and processes.

Nicki lives in Nelson with her husband, Chris Macklin, a Barrister, and their family.
